Peter Beard, exceptional photographer and person - 1938-2020

An extraordinary photographer and character, Peter Beard, died recently. In the last year or so of his life, he developed dementia and his body was found in the forest, not far from where he lived.

The 82-year-old African wildlife shutterbug — a onetime fixture at Studio 54 and pal of Andy Warhol — suffered from dementia and had been missing from his cliffside Montauk compound since March 31.

“Peter was an extraordinary man who lived an extraordinary life,” his family said in a statement. “He squeezed every drop out of every day.… He was an intrepid explorer, unfailingly generous, charismatic, and discerning. He was a pioneering contemporary artist who was decades ahead of his time in his efforts to sound the alarm about environmental damage.… He died where he lived: in nature. We will miss him every day.”

Peter Beard Romanced Lee Radziwill and Partied with the Rolling Stones. He Was a True Original.

His public persona sometimes overshadowed his work, but the late photographer was an artistic pioneer and environmentalist.
